Today, apparently, is I Heart Accountants Day. You”ll find a special page dedicated to our noble profession right here on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/iheartaccountants. And quite right too. Accountants have long been stereotyped, lambasted as being “boring”, misunderstood and undervalued. Much of this is of their own doing, of course. My wife wrote yesterday in an insightful blog piece about how a friend of hers, about to become a business owner, was blissfully unaware of the value an accountant could provide in the early stages of his venture.
I personally love the I Heart Accountants initiative although I doubt it will change any perception externally. But what if every partner in an accounting firm took it upon themselves to visit 20 clients in October to hold a quality conversation about the client”s goals and needs? At no charge – a nurturing activity. Now THAT would make an impact.
I do heart accountants. And I truly believe they can make a huge difference to the business community and the global economy. But it will only happen if accountants become proactive and get out to see their clients. Let”s stop hiding behind Facebook pages, grab that assumed mantle of trusted advisor and show we deserve it.
