I am about to head home from Auckland following an Accountability Meeting with six of our member firms today. Last night, a few of us went for a nightcap at a little Irish pub in Newmarket called The Claddagh (http://www.thecladdagh.co.nz/). My excuse was the three hour time difference – needed a cheeky whiskey to put me to sleep!
A sign out the front of the pub declared Thursday night to be Karaoke night. As we entered, however, it became event that there were only two patrons inside. No Karaoke tonight, then, I thought.
Wrong. The two in question turned out to be passionate Karaoke nuts. One would sing a song, then the other would take the stage and reel off a number. They put their heart and soul into it, giving the performances of their lives for a paltry audience…of one!
This got me thinking about accountants. You see, often your audience is of a similar size. Virtually every day, accountants around the world are running client meetings with one or two people. Are you putting as much passion into your ‘performance’ as my Karaoke nuts? Are you bringing your A game to every client meeting, irrespective of how few people are in your ‘audience’?
Next time you are in a meeting, assess your passion, your engagement and the value you are providing. Your clients deserve your best shot every single time.
